Smog
I bought a used 2002 subie not too long ago to replace the one that was totalled in the accident. The car is sweet. The only problem is that the car is catless. I have all the stock exhaust parts, dp and up. I was jus wondering if anybody could direct me to a smog shop where they could "help" me pass smog without having me take the time to remove all of the stuff and replace for stock.
Also, if I DO have to replace verything to get it smogged, would i need to replace the up? UP is a pain. Anybody know if i can pass with DP and MP cats? Thanks!

You shouldn't have to do a smog check until 2006(7?). It's difficult to get someone to SMOG a catless car, because they risk losing their SMOG license. It's easier to just bolt up your stock bits and get the car smogged when the time comes.
When yo go to get the car smogged, replacing the UP cat is all based on how well they do the visual inspection. If your uppipe is really obvious, it might be best to replace it before SMOG. If it looks pretty stock, I wouldn't bother and just try to smog the car with the stock turbo-back. Hope that helps.
Was the car purchased through a dealership, or was it private party? Because I thought when a car is sold, it has to be smogged anyway? It might just be for older cars that require smog check (5+ years old), but I'm not sure.

Until January 1, 2005, private passenger vehicles registered in urbanized areas of California are required to submit a smog certificate every other year at the time of vehicle registration; vehicles four model years old or newer are exempt, and their owners pay a $6 annual smog-abatement fee instead.
Beginning January 1, 2005, vehicles six model years old or newer will be exempt from the smog-check requirement and will be assessed a $12 annual smog-abatement fee. The additional revenue will fund the Moyer Program, which subsidizes emission-reduction programs for high-polluting diesel engines such as locomotives, ships, large trucks, and agricultural equipment. The goal of the program is laudable, but the Auto Club opposed the proposal because charging motorists who drive newer vehicles to clean up highly polluting industrial diesel engines violates the state's constitution.
Also effective January 1, 2005, vehicles four years old or newer will be exempt from the change-of-ownership smog-check requirement and its attendant fee. Instead, their owners will be assessed an additional $8 transfer fee. This change will increase state revenues without increasing overall costs for motorists. Revenues will help the Bureau of Automotive Repair pay for the costs of administering the Smog Check program. The Auto Club did not oppose this change.

so lets see if i'm reading that right... my car is an '03, therefore it falls under the "6 years old or newer" category. does that mean i don't have to visit a smog shop till 2009?

Russ: from what I read, you are correct. I hope this is true. If it is Scott and I do not have to get smogged until 2011!
Now I am really happy that I went with the catless turbo back for the new STI.
