Sales Tax Question
So I bought a used STi last month in Roseville and the dealership charges me 7.75% sales tax. Two weeks later, I get a bill in the mail from them saying that they charged me the wrong sales tax and they're asking me to pay the difference at 8%. Does anyone know if I'm legally bound to pay this tax. They're basically changing the contract, aren't they?

you pay the sales tax rate in the county the car is being registered in.
Its their mess up if they charged you wrong, but at this point, you are going to be fighting with the state.
what is the rate in your county for sales tax?

It's just weird to me because you would think they would look up the sales tax for the county I live in before typing up the purchase order. Still, to me it's like they're altering the contract on me. And they still haven't sent me replacement bulbs for the burnt out brake lights. But I'm just nitpicking there.

well yes you do, you just pay it to the dealership as you signed over power of attorney so they can handle the DMV paperwork for you and pay the tax and registration.
If they screw up, its still your name the car is under and who pays the fees.

Now, they are asking to be reimbursed the delta.
**** 'em.
Exactly, You should never have to pay for a business' mistake, especially one like this from a well established business that does this x amounts of times per day. They should eat the cost.
the tax on cars should be where it's registered and it's the responsibility of the vendor to charge the correct rate.
also the correct sales tax for Roseville is 7.25% according to the BOE's website

i think a lot of business gets it mixed up with Sacramento's rate.

A dealer sold you a car with burned-out brake lights? Shame on them, that should have been caught in used car recon, and should have been corrected before releasing the car to you. Being that brake lights are considered a critical safety item, tell them that you'll fix the lights yourself, and that they can eat the difference in sales tax.
your safety > their snafu
your safety > their snafu

Please pay us more money than is specified in the contract, we forgot to charge you.
