M rated are designed for motorcycles which are designed for a different impact.
i would contact www.pyrotect.com (formerly Bell Motorsports). they are in teh bay area (oakland) and they have EXCELLENT customer service and are very knowledgable when it comes to motorsports. they also sell a variety of safety products that are well priced and great quality (most are made for them by the major manufacturers.
i told a buddy of mine in the bay about them and he went there for a helmet, ended up leaving w/ helmet, shoes, bag, gloves, neck support and some other misc goodies for less than most places charge for just shoes and a helmet.
i've been using them and refering people to them since ~1996 and I have NEVER heard one complaint!
great prices, excellent service and local(-ish)...how can you go wrong??!??!

If anyone is buying a helmet, definitely get SA. But if you already have an M helmet, or know you only need it for Solo or RallyCross, M is fine.

they have loaner helmets at the SCCA events, but some people are probably too paranoid/disgusted to use them...but I'm not
the event on the 24th/25th is at thunderhill, same spot as the 10th/11th school/rally-x
are they still accepting snell95? I thought they changed it for this year

No need for anything fancy for RallyX. Just make sure you have a good set of all season tires. If you don't, I highly recomend the KDWS's... they're like a street raly tire. Mud flaps are always nice and the cone crew will appreciate them. A skid plate is a good idea but not necessary unless you're lowered. As far as helmets go, I actually prefer an open face because you get a nice unobstructed view of everything.

main thing for the first season is to have fun and learn what your car does in low traction conditions. You can worry about actually competing later
