Rain and Stock Sti Tires in Nor Cal?
I have a 05 Sti, with the bbs rims and the stock tires on them. I live like in the chico area. Hour away from sac. I was wondering do i really need to buy winter tires? or can i just drive around here in when it starts raining in the stock rims?

In rain you'll be Ok as long as you realize that you don't have a stellar rain tire. You will hydroplane through deep puddles, so watch your speeds and keep in tune with the car. I've run through winter on 070's with no problems except when going to the snow.

The 070s will not cause you to lose control of the car in the rain. Driving like an idiot will, and according to some idiots, nitrogen instead of gool old fassioned air in the tires could also...
I ran them all last year and had no issues in the cold/rain, snow could be an issue though...

), listen to what the car is telling you. If the steering becomes a bit light or the car begins to drift with no steering input, it's likely that standing water combined with your vehicle speed is beginning to hydroplane. Solution? Reduce speed and move to the right lane. My car began to hydroplane on the way to work one day on the Cap City Freeway just after the Hwy 99 split. It was a flash downpour and I could actually see a buildup of standing water spanning across all of the lanes. Also, I was only going 60 mph, so match your vehicle speed to the conditions. The alternative is to pick up a set of rain tires (I have BFG T/A KDW) or all-seasons for the fall/winter.

Ya like they all said... I have driven on my stock tires in HARD rains and such and it is actually pretty good as long as you dont hit a puddle... The tire likes to hydroplane, though. I was driving home in the rain on the freeway going 65 and hit a small puddle and I could definately feel it hydroplane hard and it yanked me up a little bit. So Needless to say I slowed down a little shortly after that, I wasn't about to have another hydroplaning car accident... They are no fun, and I got the scars to prove it

You should be fine if you are smart enough to adjust to current conditions.
I have dedicated winter tires to pass the people that are adjusting.

I used 070s in rain and had ZERO problems (knocks on wood). As long as you realize that you have to increase your following distance and take the "idiot-other-driver" factor into account you'll be fine.
