That photoshop- which is a very loose application of the term, "sketch" is more appropriate- did not originate with Subaru, it came from some schmuck at R&T or whoever they asked to make it. While Subaru could very well be preparing to produce a new hatchback version of the Impreza, IT WILL NOT LOOK LIKE THAT PICTURE. Perhaps in a general sense, but rest assured the designers on staff at Subaru can figure out proportion and scale when they decide to mix and match various aspects of their existing vehicles. Besides, the whole point of the Aztec was an extremely utilitarian vehicle whose appearance, for most of its intended market, didn't matter. Witness the popularity of the Honda element and Scion xB for evidence. What doomed the Aztec was a combination of unusual styling elements and being a crappy car that sucked more because of its lousy drivetrain, poor cost-to-own ratio, reliability, and brand recognition. As such, it has nothing to do with your assertion that A) subaru is making the vehicle as shown in R&T and B) that it will not sell.
If you want to know what an impreza hatch will look like, go look at a WRX wagon and imagine the B pillars moved to where they were on the old L/RS coupes and shorten the rear overhang. There you have it. The lower bumper skin won't get dragged up to hipline height, the STi wing will not be there, and they aren't going to narrow the car by 8" or so. Get a grip.

So who want's to go to the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show with me?

For the record, I never asserted that Subaru was going to produce the vehicle depicted, only that if they produced anything remotely like it I would never own one. Get your facts straight.
I also never claimed that if they produced that exact vehicle that it wouldn't sell. As I have already said, hatches are very popular elsewhere in the world, just not in the U.S. and not with me.
For future reference, I'm glad to know that I have such a prolific source for all things relating to vehicle styling, vehicle sales, purchasing trends of the general public, vehicle marketing, and all other things automotive. BTW, when are you going to start your own car company so that I can buy one of your brilliantly marketed, beautifully styled masterpieces?

OH REHEHEALLY...
I fully comprehend what you are saying B.S. (BAN SUVS, not the other). My whole intention in posting this thread was to say that I hope that R&T's crystal ball is way the hell off. I enjoy my STi and plan on buying the higher performance models of the future. Seeing that thing on page 24 really put a POTENTIAL damper on my future automotive plans.

Apparently, Subaru is trying to move "upmarket" against the Audi A3 and has decided to change the Impreza from a sedan to a 3/5 door hatchback! I wish I could post a picture of the damn thing, but imagine a short, stubby little El Camino with a camper shell and an idiotic wing and you've got the picture. They've got the STi version depicted and all I can say is that I WILL NEVER BUY ANYTHING NEWER THAN AN '07 IF THAT'S WHAT THEY'LL HAVE BY '08. They also mentioned that Subaru is not sure that this is the direction they will go in the hatchback unfriendly U.S. All we can do is pray. I think I just vomited in my mouth a bit.

How about we wait till 2007 when they present the car at the Toyko auto show?
I don't think ranting about it on i-club will make them change their minds on the design. Unless the lead designer checks i-club often.
