The coolest part of the White House is the outside, or what you can see from walking around it. The tour is a waste of time. They just show you some rooms, pictures and a couple figures/statues. The capitol tour is cool because they take you underground, the same way Congress and Senate go. If you go through your representative, you can get a pass to see the House Floor.
Knowing someone who works in the Pentagon is a huge plus, I bet you'll get to see some cool stuff there. There are tons of tours, museums, etc. to keep your time occupied. What part of DC does your friend live in? Or is he in VA? (Downtown doesn't really mean a whole lot.

Planning on heading over there in April and will probably stay about 2 weeks. One of my childhood friends and his wife live near downtown so I'm going to stay with them. Definitely planning on a Capital tour and White House (if it's open for tours) and Arlington National Cemetery, then check out whatever monuments/museums that I have time for. He works for the Pentagon, so hopefully I can also get a bit of a Pentagon tour.

If he's near Georgetown, you'll have fun. That's an awesome place, good shopping for the wife and some good bars/restaurants there.
I might be able to get you a hook up at a nice Restaurant near the White House, Old Ebitt Grill. I'll get back to you on that.

Also check out the Smithsonian and the Air and Space museum, both well worth the trip. I lived 45min outside of DC for the first 18 years of my life. The Holocaust museum is very interesting, although very depressing as well. I think it's worth the trip, but that's just IMHO.

what is so hard to understand about "parking for customers only"?
It does not read nor imply
•Parking for customers only, unless you think/your mom always said you're special
•Parking for customers only, unless you're "only going to be 5 minutes dude"
•Parking for customers only, unless you don't park your poorly restored ford truck on the street
•Parking for customers only, unless you've been in the store once before an spent $5 and think that entitles you to a lifetime membership to park in our lot whenever you please
•Parking for customers only, unless you're a semi regular customer and want free parking while you work down the street
•Parking for customers only, unless despite the bright neon "open" sign, a fully lit store, and customers inside, you still somehow thought we were closed
(Please do not try to peel out in your base model vette or poorly restored ford when I tell you to move your car or only take up one spot since its only a base model, it looks quite pathetic when you fail)

So one of my classmates in my group assignment pissed me off today.
For the assignment, our group has to evaluate a local Mikuni and do some additional work on it. Today my group decided to meet for lunch. Last week when we decided to meet, one of the people in my group said she'd need a ride from campus because she doesn't have a car. Of course no one jumped at offering to pick her up, so I did it.
This morning as I was leaving to go to campus to pick her up, she calls and says she might have to go home because she forgot her parking permit. I asked why, if she didn't have a car, would she need a parking permit. She then tells me that she does actually have a car, she just didn't know how to get to Mikuni at Arden.

So I had to drive all the way down to sac state (was coming from Roseville), pick her up, go back up to Arden, then take her back and drop her. Pissed me off.
