stay away from HP's!
my wife's pavillion sound card died less than a month after it was past the 1-year warranty and then about two weeks later the hard drive tanked!!!
i have a Dell Inspiron 6000 P(M) 1.5Ghz and 2GB RAM. thing rocks!
i use it daily at work and have no issues.
you can get a good priced Alienware lappy nowdays too.

Is there a particular screen size you're looking for?
I'm going to assume at least 60 GB and wireless capability, and at least DVD reading.
Dells are good and quite reliable, as posted earlier, check techbargains.com for updates on coupons (which seem to pop up quite a lot nowadays)
Other brands to consider... Alienware makes cool looking computers, although reliability wise I have heard a lot of stories. I'm using a 12" Averatec that I got for around $800 and it works great. I'm very happy with it, although I too have had occasional issues with it...and other users on the Averatec forums have reported a lot of problems.
my current config:
Averatec 3270 AMD Sempron processor
1.6 GHz, running with 1GB of DDR RAM
60GB HD, DVD+/-RW drive
built in SD/MMC/Memorystick reader
wireless b/g
best of luck,
-C

I recently got an Acer Aspire 1600. 1.6GHz Centrino, 2GB ram (originally 512mb), 80GB 7200rpm HD, cdrw/dvdrw, nice widescreen. Its kind of on the bulky side, but still managable. I got this for $999 at CompUSA... couldn't find a better deal at the time. The sound card is a little weak and can't power big headphones too well but works fine through a stereo. The video is just the on-board intel stuff so it works fine for regular applications and video but I doubt it would work too well for intensive gaming although I haven't tried. All in all I'm very satisfied with the laptop. I give it hell while tuning and haven't had any problems yet. Awsome package for the price.
