laptop recommendations?
the wife's laptop took a dump today. we're looking for something that's not a celeron and has 512 megs of ram at a minimum. so far we've looked at comp usa and best buy and haven't been too impressed. tomorrow is costco and sams club. our target price is between 700 and a grand.
any suggestions would be awesome.

also, my computer has been doing this wierd thing the last couple of days. whenever i wake it up from hibernating, it gives me the blue screen of death and wants to start a disk scan. something about a fat32 file system and stuff. it works fine otherwise, but it's really annoying.

Disclaimer: you all know I lag far behind much of SRIC in terms of teh computAr knowledge.
I've been real happy with my Dell. Here's the exact same Inspiron 5150 on eGhey. I bought mine just over 2 years ago, and it's, ah, used frequently.
Meaning it's been on probably 75% of the time I've owned it and used for several hours basically every day. I've used it as a jukebox running inputs to my stereo, I played CounterStrike on it, stored tons of videos, postwhored at most of the SRIC's wireless home networks... it's versatile. It's a Pentium 4 3.06 GHz processor, 40gb hdd, 512 megs ram, 32 meg video card, CDRW/DVD reader drive, built-in 802.11G card, but it has issues with older routers as you may recall. Using one of Scott's Netgear cards always worked perfectly. 1 PCM card slot, 2 USB, 1 1394, 1 network cable port, one serial, stereo headphone out, mic in, and S-video out. If I keep it on a hard surface, it sometimes gets warm, but not hot if I'm working the video or sound card hard. I just unplugged the power cable and the battery says I have over 2:45 left, and I'm listening to music off of the hard drive. Granted, I don't use the battery much, but it's still 2 years old.
If I was looking for a new laptop replacement, I'd be perfectly happy buying another Dell unless I had a good reason not to (i.e., massive discount hookup from someone on another brand).

The Dells we get at work seem to hold up pretty well.
http://www.techbargains.com/ pretty much always has discount codes
for Dell laptops of one kind or another.
Sam's club (last time I checked) had a very generous 6 month return policy on computers - this is much easier than dealing with a warranty claim.

bestbuy's got this little gem at what seems to be a good price. $150 less than we saw it for at compusa yesterday. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1130986703519
