Jobs in sac, for an artist.
Hey all,
I'm trying to get back up to sac, as i can't handle living down in the bay area very well. It's not my thing to say the least, and i grew up in Cool so you can imagine the change. I'm trying to figure what sort of career path i could take if i moved back up. Currently i work as a 3d modeler/jack of all trades for a game company, and it's really all i'm highly skilled at. Sadly i've adapted to the income and probably couldnt move back up for too much under 60k/yr. I've thought about teaching Maya, as i know it inside and out - but as you know teachers don't exactly rake in the cash. Any ideas? There aren't any game companies up there, but there is always some bizarre niche to be filled.
Tanks.

I can't help you with a job, but.....
It's ironic that you grew up in Cool & now live in San Francisco, 'cause I was born & lived in San Francisco and now live in Cool.

You're better off finding a place that allows for a reasonable (or bearable) daily commute to your current job. Preferably where the rent was cheaper so you'd be living like boss hog. Worst case scenario I have dealt with clients that commute to Oakland from the Sacramento area everyday, so...
Unless you find something solid here I've found that the job market still hasn't caught-up with the housing market for the most part. By that I mean salaries covering cost of living expenses or one's current overhead. Even the quality of life for renters has decreased because of this. Then again, this doesn't mean there's not a lot of worthwhile areas to live and work. Just doesn't seem like much of a place with your expertise.
What about out of state?

this may be a bit of a stretch, but have you taken any kind of drafting classes? if you're good at 3d modeling stuff like video games, you'd probably make a bad a$$ mechanical designer / drafting. someone proficient with Pro/Engineer or Solidworks can easily make 50~60k in Sacramento, even without a related degree.
This is a great idea - i didn't know how realistic this would have been for me, but i should probably look into some drafting classes for sure - every male in my entire family is an engineer, so i'm sure i'd get plenty of support. Thanks, you've got my mind whirring in this direction.

don't bother, sac sux.
if you do deceide, try www.seriousmagic.com i know they haire for 3D types there
or Play Inc...(don't know if they changed their name when they were bought out a few years back) but they're in Rancho Cordova.
look on their sites for HR oppertunities...
sorry i have no inside tips for getting you in.
also try some of the TV stations...i know a guy at channel 10...they do a lot of good work.
you may not be doing CGI all day, but at least you'll be working on editing or video production.
Ferrari Color also pays well, but it's more print media...and they're kinda exclusive & hard to get into.
