iPod delema

I currently have a Gen 2 iPod. IEEE-1394, Musicmatch + iPod plugin (iTunes for windows didn't exist when I got this)

I have no intent to purchase music online. I buy CDs and create uber-ized rips.

I want to get an new iPod
Here's the delema. AFAIK the USB iPods don't work with MM. And installing iTunes currupts the MM iPod plugin (why apple??)

I also don't care for the AAC conversion when music is copied to the iPod via iTunes (MM leaves it as MP3, and AAC is like running IE on OSX)

MM has a sweet batch ID3 tagging function that lets me control it.

Is converting to iTunes going to suck massive ***?
Will I miss MM features?
Is there anyway I can stick with MM?
I could also use a freeware app that manages the MP3 movement to the iPod.

Dan,

I use MM for all my batch renaming and library management. Because I don't update the ipod that frequently, all I do is blow away the existing iTunes library file (it's in My Music) and rebuild it from my music directory when I want to update the iPod through iTunes.....

I don't like GUI's for file management, so I don't like any application where accidentally hitting Delete with a group selected can remove those mp3's from my hard drive without dumping them to the recycle bin first.

You talking about iTunes or MM, because with iTunes, its just a config option whether to send it to the Recycle Bin or delete completely.

Talking about iTunes, and I know aobut that option; it's more that I'm still hardwired into something like Winamp, where I handle file management separately. I'm a luddite, remember?

Well, there is also an option to turn off file management completely And when you delete a file from your library, you don't even touch the file.

Come on, this is an apple product. My grandma could use it without screwing things up

There's plenty of other iPod software that would do the job for you, like Anapod Explorer.

Edit: Nick beat me to it.

SCREW YOU BUDDY!

I actually just dislike iTunes. I know there's ways around stuff, I jsut like doing it myself, and still don't have the functionality in iTunes that I have in MM.

Yeah, easy and intuitive software blows chunks.

What can you do in MM that you can't do in iTunes?

why are you set on an iPod?

seems like you're just getting it for the name.
you don't like the software and you don't like the AAC format...
why not go with a good quality high end MP3 player that ou don't have to mess with iTunes or iPods?

seems to me to be the smarter (and prolly cheaper) route.

I don't like the group-renaming functions in iTunes, specifically (like being able to reword a group title)

I ran into issues where iTunes wouldn't recognize things like extra spaces after bandnames as diffeerent in iTunes, but the iPod would see it as a separate group. Using MM's rename functions worked better for me.

That said, it's moot if you're just ripping new CD's and not trying to get old stuff into shape.

Okay fine, we should probably not derail Dan's thread too much

Anapod. Anapod. Anapod.

I think you can use it for 30 days or so. From what I hear, its pretty slick. But, I'm an apple apologist, so I've never tried it personally.
