Subaru was once again trying to promote its boxer engine layout and F1 seemed like the high profile place to do it. The boxer design made for a wide engine package when most engine manufacturers were going with narrow-angle V-type engines. Most of the competition was down on power compared with the Honda-powered McLarens of 1988 - 1990 seasons. The Honda is one of the reasons McLaren won Constructors Championships, as well as Driver's Championships for Prost and Senna.
