We had a 914 that you had to *kick-start* when it was hot, and it was better and more reliable than my ex's piece of **** "new beetle" golf with a body kit.

**** VW and their "soft touch interior" making up for catastrophic and persistent window regulator(twice)/coilpacks(twice)/cd changer(6 times)/O2 sensor(twice)/maf sensor(once)/brake/shift-interlock(once) failures. 25,000 ****ing miles, and that car had more problems than the worst American cars I've ever seen.

At least 6 different trim pieces of that oh-so-quality interior straight *fell off* while driving. My hoopty-***, beat-to ****, driven hard and put away wet Subaru that's had every panel out at least twice has never had a trim piece fall off, and has less rattles even with my suspension than a stock Beetle after 2 ****ing years.

Give me an aircooled that I can fix with a prybar and a hammer any day of the week.

Aircooled > watercooled.
lol, ive never owned a VW, and im not too interested in doing so.

i just had to ruffle some feathers cause it seems we have quite a few oldschool VW guys on here, haha.

I was a Chevy Corvair guy before I was an air-cooled VW guy.

What made those cars special to me was the fact that they were different from most of the other cars on the road. With the spectre of throttle-off oversteer just around the corner, they forced you to become a better driver than your average teenager. The rear-engine design also allowed you to drive in deep mud and up hills that otherwise might not have been possible in a F/R or F/F engine/drive combination with such low horsepower levels.

And everyone knows it's all about the boxer engines.

Doesn't old school = air-cooled within the VW crowd? I always thought so.
