What you are missing Kevin is that there doesn't need to be an AM or a PM after a time. AM is latin for Ante Meridiem. When it is exactly the meridiem (aka noon), you can't be before it or after it, therefore 12:00:00 PM and 12:00:00 AM are both meaningless. The only reason a lot of places use it is for clarity, and for clarity a majority of the world uses 12:00:00 PM to mean noon.

By that definition, midnight is still 12:00:00 am. Because you proclaim noon as the meridian, and there's only one of those.
