I'm pretty sure these hondas aren't VTEC.







Also more realistically, aside from the 1990 NSX and some Integras, I don't think there were any VTEC Hondas before about 1995 or '96 in the US.

As far as Toyotas w/ VTEC... VTEC is a registered trademark of Honda, I'm pretty sure they don't let Toyota use it. Toyota calls their variable valve timing VVT-i (Variable Valve Timine with Intellegence), and while it's similar technology, it's technically not VTEC.

Besides, if you want to get into VTEC w/ other names, there's also AVCS (Subaru) VANOS (BMW), VarioCam (Porsche), MIVEC (Mistubishi), VVL (Nissan), and I'm sure a bunch more, but I don't know the names used by the domestics.

ah, but VVT-i and AVCS (and perhaps the others) don't have variable valve timing and lift.

Thats what makes VTEC so fast (it's almost like a turbo).

grrr... I hate that "like a turbo" reference. It's *nothing* like a turbo... a turbo compresses the intake charge, VTEC (and the rest) allow the engine to use a different cam profile for better airflow. VTEC (and its variants) *do not* increase the amount of A/F burned in the cylinder, they just make the flow better.

So, while VTEC does make the motor more powerful, it is *not* "like a turbo".
