Typical conversation as I'm standing at a drill rig doing bore hole logging and a random person on the street comes up to me:

Person: "Hey!"
Me: "Hi, how's it going?"
Person: "So...what are we doing here today?"
Me: "Uh, drilling"
Person: "Oh really?! How?"
Me: "Uh, with that drill rig over there"
Person: "OH! That's what that is?"
(looks at gigantic drill rig, with huge auger boring a hole into the ground)
Me: "Yup, that's what we use"
Person: "So, how does it do that?" (no joke)
Me: "Uh, ever use a drill? Same thing"
Person: "Oh, that's kinda cool, never knew that"

i used to get crap like that when i was doing air monitioring around hazardous material removal.

"what's that?"
"an air sample."
"for what?"
"for asbestos." (or lead/mold/etc.)
"why?"
"cus you're standing next to guys in white suits in respirators and the building is tented off."
"oh, so should i not be in here?"
"yeah, that's what that wall of 6mil poly is doing across the front door and the big freaking signs that say "ASBESTOS HAZARD: DO NOT ENTER WITHOUT PROPER PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT" that you had to move and the caution tape you had to crawl under to get in here."
"oh..."

freaking dummies...

I had a couple of old golfer types come up to me one time and ask:

"Can we help you out?"

Uh, yeah sure buddies, why don't you go over and talk to those tatted up drillers who like to pick fights and throw 100lb. augers around because they lack anger management skills if they need any help, I'm sure they'll find something for you to do.

Edit: For reference, these guys had tattoos of people dismembering bodies with chainsaws, devils eating hearts or organs, and mummified chicks having sex with knives, lots of guns, and tattoos that looked like they'd hurt you if you touched them.

I once met some random guy at costco who started talking about all the equipment he gets from the government for hunting down dangerous animals.... and this wasn't even the stupidest part of the conversation. He then went on to say "I have this crazy powerful computer... it has so much space I can store the whole internet on it!" He said this in all seriousness without a shred of sarcasm in his voice. It took all my will power to keep from falling over laughing.
