My dobie rottie mix would probe the fence, killing the battery on the shock collar.

That is what I see my dog doing, too. She's a sneaky little *****. The manufacturer's site says they have a feature that prevents the dog from doing this but...

Chip it, I know several people that got their dogs back because of the chip. Oh, and one person that had to pay a lot of money because his chipped pit bull went on a rampage...

The only rampage my dog would go on would be one that involves licking and sniffing.

Have you tried training your dog not to leave the yard?

My pitties are pretty good about not leaving if they see the fence open. I had one instance they left and they came back 30 min later. Thank goodness they didn't get into any trouble.

I accidentally let my girlfriend's two mini dachsunds in with the garage door up and entry door open. Luckily they weren't real interested in going for a stroll last night...

We have spent a LOT of time training the dog. Like I said, she listens perfectly while in the house and in the backyard. It's when she gets out that she doesn't listen.

When she does get out, she usually returns within the hour. This last time was the only time that she has been "lost" and she went like a mile + away from the house.

It took 21/2 weeks with my dog and her training collar for her to learn she is only allowed to the end of the grass.

My sister did the wireless fence one. Worked well her, but her dog is a pansy.

It only shocked him twice before he knew his boundaries. Heck, the actual collar was only on for 3 months (or so) and he's been collar free for a year plus and still won't go anywhere near the edge of the property.

I'd say chip him at least though.

yeah, some dogs learn that its the collar shocking them and then will go back to their old behaviors once the collar is off

Yeah, her dog isn't exactly smart. She calls him "Special Ed" for a reason.

My dachshund couldn't swim. Well, she could, but not well, and she didn't like it.

We don't have a pool, but at the beach he avoids the water. He isn't afraid of it but he avoids it. He's a Basset (which don't like to swim) and he's solid muscle so he'd just sink
