So, after the latest doggie escape my pooch pulled last week, we are looking at options for our dog.

1.) underground fence

Basically, you bury wire on the property boundaries and if doggie gets too close, she gets a shock. My buddy has one for his dog and it is great. But he has a tiny yard. I have put the collar on and it is not that bad of a shock. Only problem is wiring 1/3 of an acre is going to be a pain.

2.) wireless fence

From the reviews online, it seems these tend to be inconsistent at best...

3.) remote training collar/transmitter.

Basically the same thing as the fence but manual. You carry around a garage door opener and zap your doggie if they do a no-no. I think this may have the potential to be retarded... what if someone's garage door opener actually activates this?

2.) "chipping"

Unfortunately, it yields no performance benefits, but then again, there aren't any dangers to the manifold. We will likely get this done anyway. It's only like $20.



So, does anyone have one of these fence things? How hard was it to install? Any problems/issues besides the moral quandary about shocking your dog?

 

Always chip, for sure.

I'm picturing you wandering around with the shock collar on, though, and I can't process further thought becuase I'm laughing too hard.

 

1) seems like the best option, see #2 for reason
2)My ex tried this for her dog. He'd see something beyond the perimeter and ignore the shock because he was focused on whatever he saw, then when he finally came back he'd get shocked as he crossed back over it. This is why option 1 is better since it helps reinforce a fence that is already there.
3)The key to training is consistency which remotes do not provide.
4)the dog should be chipped anyways. That was if the dog looses its collar while escaping the info is still there. Also, if a family finds the dog and says it "had no collar" and decides to try to keep it, if it gets scanned by a vet, they'll be able to return the dog.

Oh, and some people down the street from me have option 2 and their dog will run out to the middle of the yard and bark, but wont come near the fence.

ive had some friend with the underground fense..works but ya doing your whole yard would be a pain

 

how big of a dog are we talking here?

home depot and lowes sell some nice dog run enclosures pre packaged, you just have to assemble the fence panels.

of have you considered crateing the dog?

 

 

She is medium sized dog. She is crate trained and is a PERFECTLY obedient dog inside the house and in the backyard. It's when she gets out that she will not listen.

Yeah, we've been meaning to do this for a while. This is exactly what happened when she got out. She still had her collar, but her tags ripped off.

It's crazy. From just seeing her inside the house and in the backyard, you would think that she is the best behaved dog. The second we take her outside she completely mental.

 

Not in alligator/shark infested moats.
