Dang! or Tire tech 101

Apparently a screw in your tire is not a good thing. Long story short, got a flat, went to get it patched, and the guy at les schab said it wasnt patchable as the thread or bead was splitting.

He also said if I replace one tire on an AWD car, I need to replace all of them. Is this true? Or could I just try and pick up a used Azenis RT-215? If so, anyone got a used 225/45R-17 RT-215 sitting around?

If i do need to pick up a new set of RT-615, any recs on a place where i can get them cheap?

Much thanks for any info.

I dont know if you guys have Wheel Works up in the sac area but they price match. You can bring in online prices from tire rack or something and they will give the online price.

Having to replace one tire is a good excuse to shop around and buy new rims with tires (that's what I did). My other tires were really low on tread already though. But I ended up getting 8 tires (4 never used) and rims for only a few hundred more than buying 4 new tires online/store.

i hear you on the opp. to get a new set of rims, however $ is tight right now, so the cheapest option (within reason, ie, not going back to the stocker rims & RE92's) is the best option.

You won't find another RT215. I don't know how you even have any still. You need to replace all 4 tires, or find an independent shop that will be willing to fix your flat off-the-books.

yeah, it looks like getting 4 new tires is the direction I'm headin in. 4 rt-615's for $488 (includes shipping) from Vulcan (cheapest i found). I figure about $15 a week to get them mounted. So about $550 for a new set. Does that sound about right, or should I be looking out for any additional fees?

$550 is pretty good. But living in Sac, don't you have winter wheels? I wuoldn't run 615s year round there.

I went through last winter with the 215's. I guess that was what, 4 rainstorms and a few brief coldsnaps. There was maybe some minor sliding (always controlled), but it was ok. And my car has yet to see the snow so I dont think thats really a consideration.

why?
615's arent the devil tire...

driver skill > tire

i have semi-slicks on the front of the truck, run them year round...no issues there.
DONT put yourself into a place that would cause the issues.

Driving snow tires in rain/cold/sleet>>>driving summer performance tires. I love having tires that don't suck in a given condition, whenever that may be. I'm not sayign it's impossible to get around Sac in winter rains on something like 615s, but I'd much rather have the proper tool for the job.

well, the rt-615's have been purchased. After reading around here and on nasioc, supposedly they are a little quieter and have better wet grip than the 215's. Now all i have to do is wait till they get here. ** looks for ups truck **

buttttt.....
we dont so much get this sleeeeeeet you speak of.
hell I rolled hockey pucks up to northstar for new years... 80+ up the hill.
In ice... sure they suck ***.. but.. i drive a freakin tank, with 9+inch wide tires... Ice will suck no matter what.
I have a winter set of rims and tires though...just a pain in the *** to swap Studs and everything.
If 615's were cheap enough in the size i needed.... they would be on there.

RT615s are awesome. I'll be running them this summer myself. I just like having the best tire I can reasonably have for a given season/purpose. Hence the studded nokkians the 615s are replacing in a couple weeks.

The things I do in my subies in the rain/sleet/snow... I wouldn't do on my autocross tires. I don't liek being limited by my tires even if I could still get from poitn A to point B.

Plus, I get to keep more than one set of wheels this way.

I never would of thought a screw in one tire would end up costing +$500, but now i'm looking forward to getting some new shoes for the car. Maybe now Paul will take pity on me and hook me up with a deal tomorrow...
