Spy photographer Chris Doane for Brenda Priddy & Company caught a disguised 2008 Subaru WRX in testing this week in California. Previously, there have been several sightings of possible WRX test mules (in Legacy bodies). these pictures show an actual WRX prototype. The car is expected to take some inspiration from the Subaru B5 concept, though evidently not as much as one might expect. As for power, insiders are anticipating a big update to the 2.5-liter H4 turbo, with an output of around 330-horsepower. Priddy says the Impreza name could change for the 2008 model year. Gallery after the jump…

Change the name? WTF? Why?

Just a base model and an sti will be sick. Subaru needs to move away from the Dodge idea of making 100,452,346,346 different trims for one model (ie. Ram).
The pics in my first post are the closest speculation we can get of what we'll see at New York.

I like all the options, I wish there was more. Like getting a 6-speed in non-STIs.
Or different color options for STI seats carpet and doors. I'd also like to see Delete options, (radio, AC, power doors and windows) that would almost = Spec C.
Options are what made the 60's such an awesome time for Cars. Example, 1967 there were 5 engine choices for the Mustang, (200, 289, 302, 390, 427) Where have all the options gone? Now in a Subaru there are 3 engine choices, but you can’t mix and match other things like, brakes, seat colors, paint colors, spoilers, wheels, tires, trannys, sound systems, and more. You can no longer get the base model with the best engine. In the 60’s you could.
Now days if you want one thing you're stuck getting all the other "package" crap with it.

I get what you're saying with the packages and limited amount of options.
But I guess I should say this: A larger gap between the 2.5>WRX>STI could be a good thing. And thats what Subaru is doingwith the 08. The sti will have a wider body than the base model.

I'd post better pics but they are hard to come by.
