Unfortunately, kids don't think that. I had a catless exhaust on my WRX (along with VF30, injectors, uppipe, EM, fuel pump) and switched it back to a single high flow cat in the downpipe. The car ran much better, didn't smell like a rolling refinery, and the power difference was less than 5WHP (confirmed on a dyno). But some of these people read something on the intardnet somewhere, someday and/or their buddy told them this is how it should be.

Caveat:
Now, of course, if you have some built motor and giant turbo, it may be more than a 5WHP difference, and the cats are only one of a long list of CARB violations, so it may not matter nearly as much as some guy with a few bolt-on parts.

I remembered it as 15hp after tuning. We've had this discussion before- more power from bolt-ons without tuning is not necessarily a good thing. Indiscriminant leaning out in parts fo the powerband = bad.

with the CAI it was a good thing since the AFRs after the bolt-on were more inline with what the car should be running.

its an easy fix for a car that run fat from the factory

Not so good for a car that already pings excessively from the factory.

Besides that, the long term fuel trims will eventually add the fuel back in and the gains will dissapear. Its just ghetto a/f tuning. Do it right the first time and you won't regret it.

Thanks

And to answer the original question, if the dealership really wants to, they can check how many times the ECU has been reflashed. Then when they compare it with their records that say they have never flashed the ECU themselves, they'll know it has been messed with. Now I've never heard of this actually happening to anyone, so I would imagine you'd have to give them a really good reason and it would have to be a very crappy dealership. Stick to the recommended dealerships and try not to break things and you should be ok.

Thanks

Is there really a flash count maintained in the ECU? Can the freeware tools read it?

Reminds me a a VW guy I was talking too. I told him about the theoretical flash limits of the Subaru ECU and he went on about how VAGtools (or whatever it's called) could reset the counter. He just didn't get it that it was a physical limit not some software limit.

So then i have another question:

If you add Catback Exhaust and Intake to a 05 STI you need to tune it because it wont run correctly if you dont, correct?

Well then why does subaru offer a SPT catback and a SPT intake but no tuning for them??? It doesnt make sense??? Can someone show me if i am missing something here.
