Car Info: A limousine with a chauffer
So last night was full, full I say, of fail.
Back story: On Saturday, I switched the direction of our fans, because it was hot as hell in the house. I thought I got the fans all cleaned off, but maybe not.
Back-back story: Starting about 10 years ago, all new home construction is required to have smoke detectors wired together. If one alarm is tripped, all alarms in the house go off.
1:45 am: Fire alarms go off. I don't even remember getting out of bed. My first memory is me punching buttons on the alarm keypad thinking the house alarm was going off. I got the alarm disabled, but the fire alarms were still happening.
2:00 am: Fire alarms stop. I go outside and see no smoke coming from the house. Odd, but we go back to bed.
2:45 am: I fall asleep.
2:49 am: Smoke detectors all start going off again.
3:15 am: They turn off.
3:17 am: They start again.
I'm on the phone with ADT thinking it's somehow related to the house alarm (I have fire built in to the system) but they're saying it's not. We pull the plug on the alarm panel and disconnect backup power in the main box. Still going off. They're right. The woman mentions that dust in the detector could trip falsies like this, and as she mentions it I realize that earlier the alarm went off when I opened the front door, and came back on a couple minutes after I closed it.
I get the wifes hair dryer and start trying to blow dust out of the detector in the hall. Alarms still going off. I move in to the first bedroom and do the same. I see a chunk of dust-bunny, not unlike the chunks one might find on the ceiling fan, shoot out of the alarm. They silence.
3:30 am: Dyson-ize all smoke detectors in the house.
3:45 am: Reconnect house alarm.
4:00 am: Bed time. Well, only for me. Wife has to be at work at 6, so she just gets up.
8:30 am: I wake up to a text message from a class mate telling me I missed the exam this morning.
HELLLO, Tuesday!

That sucks. I'll check mine. They are the same setup. We have the originals daisy chained but isolated from the alarm. Then we added one for the alarm. Alarm co. didn't want to touch the original stuff for liability reasons.
I love it when the backup batteries start to fail. It's usually in the middle of the night when it's cold enough that the voltage drops below the fault threshold. Should be a fricken button to shut 'em up for 6 to 12 hours instead of having to track down a battery at 4am.

So I'm on this conference call. We are having performance problems on some system.
Application guy: Yeah, this is a relatively new issue. We installed this monitoring software on the system that polls every 15 minutes and we've been having the issue.
Me: Interesting. So have you tried stopping the monitoring software?
Them: No. But I don't see why that could be causing a problem.
Me: But, you weren't having a problem, then you installed the software, and now you are?
Them: yeah
