Hmmm. Looks like I need to try Widmer Hefeweizen. So far it's a toss-up between that and Erdinger for Hefeweizen.

Ok allow me to state why I think your choices are wrong or right and then I will add my picks.

Yours:
1)Newcastle – I hate this beer, but I see the point ot having it on tap. So from a business stand point I say good job.
2) Erdinger Weissbier – Sorry never had this beer before (I know I am ashamed) but it doesn’t look run of the mill to me.
3) Anchor Steam – Eh - OK
4) MGD – No, just no. No No No!! You already have ****ty white trash beer on tap, Coors, why add another one? Why waste a good tap. Then again if you feel the need to have 2 ****ty beers on tap, at least you picked MGD and not Budwieser.

Now My picks:

1) Heinken
2) Widmer Hefeweizen
3) Sierra Nv – I hate it but it is a good seller.
4) Anchor Steam / or something else. I am not stuck on AS but I cant think of anything else right now.

Now that I think about it I don’t think I have ever seen Heinken on tap here in the states. I would keep one tap open to rotate some of the local flare or new top hits. Fat Tire is so last year, and I think it sucks that it stuck around ant took up tap space. Things need to rotate, IMO.

2) Fat Tire
3) Anchor Steam
4) hmmmm ... and Gordon Bierch

This is precisely why I want Coors Light and MGD out of the six taps. Both are cold brewed (which I like in a **** beer because it doesn't give me a headache) and because they've been pre-approved by the White Trash/NASCAR folk.

I know a ton of people that would rather have a cold MGD than any trendy beer. My father and ALL of his construction buddies fall into this category. I need their business as well.

My absolute favorite draft beer is a Scottish Ale. It's dark, smoky, strong, slightly sweet and not bitter.

1. Sacramento Brewing Co's Scottish Ale
2. Boddingtons
3. Guiness
4. Bass

Just my $.02

Word. You're trying to pick beers for your restaurant that will have broad appeal. Truthfully, MGD and Coors are extremely popular and it would be a bad decision to pull them in favor of a trendy beer that would appeal more to beer snobs (like us). If you have those beers and then some other widely accepted and quality beers, you'll basically have a beer on tap for just about anyone.

1. newcastle
2. bud light (this is what I drink 90% of the time)
3. red hook esb or seasonal (sun rye is really good)
4. sudwerk's marzen or hef

other good choices are pyramid, sammy, red tail, etc...

IMO heineken and sierra are over-rated beers, but very popular none the less.

1. Schiltz
2. Pearl
3. Mad Dog 2020
4.Odoul's

Do I know my beers or what?

Seriously, I think it's good that you have some of the "construction crew" stuff as well as some of the finer beers for those with different tastes. I like the idea of a rotating tap. I also suspect that once you open up, the customer base will clue you into what is in demand.

I also wonder if there is some specific market guide literature available that does those types of surveys on a regional basis to see what is in demand.

Finally, it might be worth a call/visit to the brewing department at UC Davis to get an idea of what is hot and what is not on a regional basis.

Good luck and much success!
