it got its name from the french royal family, due to the original settlements in the kentucky region being known as the state of "Bourbon".

Most bourbons are distilled in Kentucky, and it is sometimes said that only Kentucky whiskey can properly be called bourbon. As of today, there are no running distilleries within the current boundaries of Bourbon County due to new counties being formed from Bourbon County since early whiskey making days. It is also ironic that Bourbon County is a dry county.
