Im moving to Reno in about 2 weeks...lol. Does anyone know of a good apartment that isn't tooo too expensive? That is somewhat safe and I would feel comfortable parking my car? TIA

Not to thread jack or anything, but how is Reno compared to like Sac, when it comes to living/jobs/pay/traffic etc? All I know is that it snows there.

 

Traffic getting across town sucks at rush hour; there's 1 freeway or a bunch of surface streets. There's ways around it like any city. Lots of jobs relating to the casino industry: hospitality and service jobs, and lots of retail, but there's also a bunch of companies that run shipping hubs out of Reno/Sparks/Fallon (tire rack, summit, amazon, etc). I think pay is about the same but there's no state income tax as the gambling pays for it (IIRC) so you end up taking a bit more home.

 

Im going to be in the area on 4/25-26 ... Any meets planned?

Yeah, meets are on Thursday evenings. There is a time trials event on the 26th out at Reno/Fernley Raceway though, but I don't know how many people will be going just to watch.

No state income tax for the win. Traffic is bad in a few spots (and very predictable) but its nowhere near as bad as sac gets during rush hour.

 

Yep, traffic sucks if you just absolutely positively have to get on the freeways during commute hours, but otherwise it's not that bad at all. Jobs are plentiful in service, gaming and warehouse/shipping industries. If you can drive a forklift (or learn), you shouldn't go more than a couple weeks without a job that pays okay. Housing prices aren't any better than Sac, but the rest of the cost of living is a little better IMO. Rent isn't bad, it's definitely a renter's market now. I'm in a 3/2/2 house in a newish neighborhood for $1150 a month. Lots of 2 bedroom apartments in the $750-900 range you can be comfortable in. The "premium" places with tons of stuff like pools and workout facilities and stuff are around $1000-1200.

 

As for living, housing and renting are about equivalent to Sacramento, and maybe a hair cheaper. Environment wise, its much drier, so when it gets over 100, at least its a dry heat compared to Sacramento's horrible humidity. And yeah, it snows in the winter, but not bad if you stay in town. Maybe only a handful of days a year with snow on the roads.

Also, as for doing things, it depends on what you like to do. It is a smaller town and does miss out on a few things that bigger cities provide (like a lot of good restaurants). Otherwise there is plenty to do, especially if you are the outdoorsy type.

All of them are good.

But please don't be some sort of touge jackass on our roads please! There is a beautiful road course in Fernley that'll beat the pants off of any backroad in the area AND you can actually learn how to drive your car instead of just pretending like you know how to drive your car.

 

^understood. Unfortunately I don't have the $200+ to put out for a day at the track.

Why is it that when someone asks for a suggestion for a mountain route, that people think that they want to "smash" on it? Can't someone just take a leisurely ride on a road and stop for pictures occasionally?

I understand that you are concerned about racing on "your" roads, but I think you should be more conerned about the people that are drinking instead of those out for a cruise.
