All the OS X's have been named after big cats. Originally they were internal dev names, but they kinda caught on as a marketing term, and you know how those mac kids get when they start to feel cool and all insidery.

Safari was chosen because you are "exploring" the web, you know, much like you'd explore the jungles of Africa.
