ssca national event. atwater ca.

hey guys, this weekend was the sports car club of america national auto x event at the old air force base in atwater. there were 345 cars there. i saw about 6-7 subies an sti's. they were pretty cool, but overall i thought the driving skills lacked. it seemed like just who had more money into there car.

did anyone attend or race? it was a cool track.

A friend of mine went. 05 CGM 2.5RS. He has a little 2.5RS sticker/stripe around the lower portion of his doors.

I was driving the blue rs. i was able to get a 47.7XX on sunday with a couple of botched turns.
My first two runs, i kept overcooking the showcase turn and went off course. On the third run, i almost didn't make the showcase turn and i drifted the last sweeper scrubbing a little too much speed. On saturday, i was just too slow...i braked too much (50.0XX).

madlib : good driving!

jizzo : I'd suggest you figure out a bit more about autocross before posting and trashing most of the Subarus that were there (I'm trying to politely say "Get a clue") . There are pretty good reasons that the STU and STX cars (other 2 classes full of Subies, besides madlib in DSP) were running slower times than madlib. Being on tires that are a lot LESS sticky (per class rules) than DSP being pretty high on the list.

It'll be interesting to see how the protest drama from STX plays out with the Solo Events Board....

i saw the stx class on sunday. an the cars were basically stock. im not sure of all the rules an regs but, the subies were turning like 49.6-high 50's. the average was like 50.3. it wasn't bad but the cars need more parts in them to go faster. i didnt see any sti's go out. is ur impala black?

I was one of the Subarus in STX. Car is about 90% modded for the class.....can do a header and coilovers (over my STI struts and aftermarket springs) beyond what I have now, but that's about it.

You really ARE pretty limited in what you can do, even in a "modified" class like that. Many common mods on these boards would throw you into Street Mod (SM), which is about as close as you get to an "unlimited" class. For example, even silicone intercooler hoses (those $120 Samco hoses) or a simple manual boost controller technically throw you into SM!

More importantly, the STX, STS and STU classes are all limited to tires with treadwear rating over 140 (i.e. Falken Azeni, Hankook R2S, Kumho Ecsta MX, BFG KD). This is a BIG "handicap" on a very abrasive surface like Atwater. In contrast, DS (where a BONE STOCK WRX goes, almost NOTHING allowed except R-compound tires) is about as fast to slightly faster than STX. So you can run the really sticky R-compounds, or do all the STX legal mods (coilovers, swaybars, bigger tires and wheels, limited power mods) with "less sticky" tires and end up about the same place time-wise.

In other words, a 2.5RS in DSP is EXPECTED to be faster than a WRX in STX class or even an STI in STU.

In Street Prepared, the WRX and STI get "lumped together" into ESP. 2.5RS goes into DSP (which is a "slower" class than ESP). Meaning that if you have a WRX (and not an STI), you're completely screwed as far as Street Prepared autocross.

i know i dont know very much about autocross but, you dont have to be on the defensive so much. im sorry i touched a soft spot but, for modded wise, i only saw suspension. i dont know much about the scca an the rules/classes/regs but know i'm informed. i just seemed like the the awd on the wrx pushed alot(under steered) because the track was so tight. an, compared to some of the evo's, bmw's, miatas, ect. the subarus didnt have much to them for streed mods. thats wat i was refering to not the suspension. to be competitive, you had to have a lot of suspension done. i know this, duh turns! also, the driving skills of some people were sorry. i've driven formula dodge an i know how to drive. i've raced go-karts for 8 years, an i am a skip barber graduate. i havnt tried the national series yet because, i affects my schooling. an from my knowledge an skills that i've aquired, some people wernt good. i wasnt refering to subies only. even though the guy in the wagon spun out a few times pushing his car to far. but for all the classes, i thought the driving was ok. there were a few people(2-3) who were good drivers. but majority of the people couldn't. i'm just making it clear to everyone out there that im not trying to hate, just giving my opinion.

So Jizzo, I assume you're gonna be at the next autocross to show us all how to drive since evidently we don't know how. I still think you're WAAAAY missing the point of my posts above.

May 14th, Candlestick. Come out and impress us.....

(aka : this sport is a bit harder than it looks from being a spectator.....)

this has gone to far man. an yes i do understand that there are certain things you cant do that affect the handles of the car for the specific class. im not as dumb as you think.

Jizzo : I've seen many autocrossers who become good road racers. You rarely see the opposite. The skillset is tougher to pick up for autocross.....you have to think MUCH more quickly than while on the road course, there is zero downtime between turns. Also, since the track changes every time and you have exactly THREE chances to get it right, the ability to translate between a quick look (course walk) outside the car to behind the wheel is essential.

There are many road racers out there who tried autocross, sucked, and moved "up" to road courses .

Rob : OK considering the car, 10th. My commuting may hate it, but I'm getting the urge to go ahead and throw coilovers back in the car and take it further towards that "less streetable but a bit faster at autocross" edge .
