Project auto-x/ot car

Ok, here is where I stand. I have autocrossed a 96 Mustang Cobra in EM and SM2 for the past two years. I love autocrossing, but feel like I would love open tracking...maybe even club racing someday. I couldn't have had a less competitive car in the classes I am in (sm2-bc. of 4.6l supercharged engine). I want build some sort of car that I can autocross competitively, but at the same time is compatible w/ other racing classes (ie-club racing). I am concidering such vehicles as the Fox Mustang (79-93), WRX (the idea of an awd turbo, not necissarily A WRX), miata.
What do you guys think? What models are a good starting point? Starting cost is definately a factor. I would have a budget of around $6000. Is $6k realistic? If not, what are my options. I want it to make good power and handle very well.
Thanks for your advice in advance. I know a good deal about mustangs, but I know very little about the Subaru's...just what I have gathered from talking to local autocrossers. Educate me!!

Unfortunately, there are currently no SCCA classes in club racing for AWD cars like the WRX. I have been in contact with my local region to try to get a category added for the 2004 season, so keep your fingers crossed! RX-7's are very inexpensive way to both auto-x and run competitively on tracks. Just my 2 cents!
