PR-Erickson Takes Home Thong from Baie des Chaleurs!

Last Ditch Racing, Maine's premier rally team, and Triple Caution, Inc., the Northeast distributor for MOTUL lubricants teamed up to present yet another Triple Caution Thong award at the recent Rallye Baie Des Chaleurs in New Richmond Quebec, Canada.
Round three of the Canadian Rally Championship, Baie Des Chaleurs saw a strong field of competitors vying for the win, with Antoine L'Estage taking a commanding win.
The Triple Caution Thong award is not about winning though. Although the criteria for the award changes from event-to-event, winners are usually teams or persons that have persevered in the face of adversity. There is usually a good dose of humor involved with the award as well!
Although there were great performances on the stages and many who could have won the award, LDR's John Cassidy(driver) and Dave Getchell(co-driver) were most impressed with 17 year old newcomer to the sport, Chloe Erickson. Co-driving her father, Sylvain Erickson in their Mitsubishi Evolution, she set an example for rallyists in North America by choosing to use a HANS device.
Cassidy and Getchell have been using the HANS device for a little over a year and have been proponents of safety in the sport. Said Cassidy, "Two things impressed us about Chloe. The first was that as a rookie she is confident enough to sit with her father, who is obviously very quick! The second is the level of maturity she demonstrated by choosing to adopt personal safety equipment that isn't yet mandated in our sport." Cassidy and Getchell are proponents of the HANS and side head restraint seats. "Our sport has implicit dangers that other forms of motorsports may not have. We're travelling down forest roads at speeds up to 120mph with nature just outside the window. Hopefully other crews seeing Chloe with her HANS will choose to investigate ways to protect themselves while competing."
The World Rally Championship, along with other major motorsports series, mandates the use of the HANS device, but rallying in North America currently does not. Most World Rally Championship teams use side-head restraint seats.
The team presented the award to Chloe, only after discussing it with father Sylvain first. "Dave and I respect Sylvain. His skill and history in the sport is significant, and we wanted to make sure he would not be offended by the presentation." Chloe initially accepted the award with a bit of trepidation, but when the reasons for the award were translated into her native French, she graciously accepted with a big smile. No doubt she'll place it in the trophy cabinet with her third place trophy from the event!
A podium and a Triple Caution Thong-it doesn't get much better than that. Expect great things from Chloe Erickson in the future!
