COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- A race official with the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb was killed Tuesday morning when he was hit by a race car.
Henry Bresciani, 67, of Colorado Springs, Colo., was struck and killed by a mini-sprint car driven by Jay Stewart at the summit of Pikes Peak at about 8:15 a.m. Bresciani was holding the finish flag as participants completed the run.
The accident occurred during the first practice session for the 83rd running of the Hill Climb, scheduled for this weekend.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Henry's family and friends as they cope with this tragedy," said Phil Layton, the race director for the Hill Climb. "It is very difficult to lose a member of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb family."
Race officials said the event would go on this weekend despite the tragedy. Stewart was not injured in the accident.
The Hill Climb is the second-oldest car race in the United States. The Indianapolis 500 is the oldest.
