The End of the Impreza?
During the coverage of Rally DE Italia there was a report on new rules for WRC. Transverse 4 cylinder, non turbo, spec transmission. Subaru would be left out with there current powertrain layout. I think this is an atempt by Max Mosley to bring other manufacture into the sport. While I would like to see more manufactures I would hate to lose the Boxer 4 layout of the current Impreza.

I heard it last night and researched it a little bit.
Supposedly yes Subaru will bend to the rules in order to be in the rally, but they will not completely ditch the horizontally opposed turbo 4 cylender for sales to the general public. Although they may make another model, that will feature this new 2.0 N/A 4 cylender.
Also they have known that the rule change was coming for like 5 months or something, so they have been in development. I say that WRC is doing this to let in Honda and Toyota and other crappy manufacturers that have been weeded out through the years.
To add to that, Mitsubishi has posted that they will be fully involved in next years WRC championship.
Cheers

There are good reasons to change the rules (like slowing the cars down) but I would hate the lose of choice of layout. I identify Subaru with the boxer 4 layout. I think it would be boring to watch cars with all the same powertrain layouts. What about the return of Porsche? Will this leave them out?

From: Are you too one of the few still living the past? Well I can change that! With a simple wicket. Yes, my friend, a wicket. PM for details.
Car Info: No car right now....sob.
Uh huh.....I got my fingers right here duder.
I personally wouldn't think that the Impreza any less than what it is currently, but I wouldn't open up my arms and embrace the change.

The Boxer 4 and AWD are the signatures of the Impreza. It will be like when Toyota turned the Corolla from a RWD sport coupe to a compact family sedan.
I feel that if Subaru turns to I4s (and be like everyone else), it loses a big part of its identity. No more boxer rumble? I'm glad I bought a Subaru while they still kick ***.

that's a horrible new rule. i think it's dumb. the other car companies got weeded out, because they couldn't cut the cake. those car makers should make better cars, not bring others down to their level.
well, not that i have cable to watch wrc, so actually i don't care!! no really i'm just upset i can't watch the speed channel.

Competition should improve the breed, not bring down the innovators.
This is not a first though. Porsches and Audis have been banned from some forms of racing (LeMans, Touring Car) in the past b/c of "advantages" like AWD.
I remember that in the Speedvision Cup races and/or GT racing (Sorry, I forget which one), BMW 3 series cars had to add ballast to their cars so that the Honda Integra Type Rs in the same class could stand a chance.

I dont think Toyota was weeded out...for a while there they were kicking *** till the got caught stretching the rules till they screamed. As for Honda...never was there to be weeded right?? Not that im defending Honda by any means...
