Decently priced Digital SLR?

My girlfriend is an awesome photographer -- she uses film now and wants to move up to digital, but she can't really afford a DSLR right now. Her birthday is coming up and I'd like to get her something decent..whether it be just the body or maybe a used kit with a lens and a flash, bag battery mem cards etc if I can find a deal somewhere.

Does anyone have suggestions? Preferably it should be over 6 MP's. I've been looking at the D70's on ebay, and some of the canon EOS cameras, but I don't know what I should be looking for exactly . Is ebay safe for picking up cameras and lenses? Thanks!

x002x is selling his Nikon D70. Hit him up, or check his thread in NorCal Classified.

Its sold, and it was like 500$. I saw a D70 on ebay with a lens and a flash and batteries and flash cards for like 250$. Thats probably a lowball, but money savings is money savings...you know? :P. Id like to stay in the few hundred range, which is why if I can only get her a body, then so be it.

If you want a used canon rebel 300D, I got mine used a few months ago for 225 for the body, kit lens, and 4gb CF card. I think the 300D has 6.2 or 6.1 mp.
If you're looking for decently cheap the 300D normally goes for 250 and the XT goes for 300, but those prices are hard to find sometimes.

Contact Subydude, he has a 400d/xti body for sale a while back.

Look into the Nikon D40, D40x or D60.
Look into the Canon xti, xsi or 40D.

Buy the body used if you can on craigslist. But Lenses new.

What kind of film camera does she have?

Costco bundles are usually great.

Stay away from 3rd party dealers on Amazon or buy.com from the new york or Brooklyn area. If it sounds too good to be true, it is.

I've seen plenty of D70 bodies going for about $400 on craigslist.

Costco has the XSI with 18-55 lens for $799. That's what I got. There is also the new XT. Just like the XSI minus a few features. Slightly cheaper.
