Calling all photographers: Nikon or Canon?
#48
Well, sounds like you're no beginner, so I'd say go for the D200, more options. I just got a D80, kinda wish I waited, and a brand new 18-200 VR lens, which I've only used once so far. I'm looking to get another wide angle lens, so I'm willing to drop the VR lens, if anyone's interested.....

I have 2 friends, each with the canon rebel xti. Its a sweet camera, takes awesome pictures with no editing. camera is pretty light as well, and it looks cool in my opinion (one friend's is silver/black, the other is all black). it has a lot of differnet modes and such, pretty much a high quality camera overall

i dont understand why ANY company makes silver cameras, i think they are so ugly (mainly a rant towards digital camcorders, how they look so cheap in silver, if they were black theyd look pro)

I went through this a while ago, and I ended up getting a Canon 20D. The 350D was more along with my price range I think there is a thread around here somewhere with people calling me an idiot for getting such a cam as a first DSLR. The thing was, I got this bonus from work I wasn't expecting, had no bills and such so I just went and bought the 20D body before reason kicked in. I had been playing with a few at camera shops and for some reason I just liked the feel, controls, action and such of the 20D the best. Now, I like the 5D the best for it's sensor, enviro seals and such but I know it's way more camera than I need. I personally did not like the feel of the Rebel series cameras even though I know they are great. Nikon is excellent gear and you cannot go wrong there as far as I know. My choice of the 20D was not very scientific but to tell you the truth I have not regretted it since. I saved up and just recently got two new lenses - a 17-40 f/4L and a 70-200 f/4L IS. I know I could have gotten the f/2.8 non IS 70-200 for around the same price but I didn't want the extra weight and don't think I would be doing many long distance indoor shots. I think the IS will be more handy for me on hikes and stuff. I wanted to get the 16-35 f/2.8L but read some not-so-stellar reviews of it, and got the 17-40. I've been happy with both even though I haven't spent much time with them yet. Would like to get a longer tele down the road, but cannot get my cash tree to sprout.

I've been waiting like 4 months for the price of the XTi to drop down. Just can't spend 700+ on a camera. If you decide to go with the XTi, which is what I've been looking for, the cheapest place to get it is beachcamera.com. I think thye have the kit for 675ish, no tax, free shipping.
Also, if anyone of you are looking for a lense, Canon is about to release their fall rebate really soon. Check it out here..it's the Canadian one but US should be able to same. They have mostly lenses and the 5d, I'm really hoping they include the XTi for the US but I doubt it.
And if it hasn't been mentioned already, the lenses are way more important than having the best body. People say...spend your money on the lense b/c that's whats going to make the difference. Of course you're going to have to get a decent DSLR first.

The rebate actually isn't out yet, they are just talking about it because the Canadian rebate was release. They usually release it on October 15 or 16 so we will have to wait until then.
