external wastegate,up/down-pipe re-build.

Hi.

As some of you know I own a 99mod Subaru Forester S Turbo. The only thing left of the Fozz is the shell.Everything else is an 04 WRX STI 2.5 USDM engine,6 speed tranny and drivetrain,Eibach Prostreet suspension ++.

The guy that buildt the engine must have been on crack or some other unsuited substance when he mounted the turbo...

He mounted the turbo in a 35 degree angle off level(!) the consequences
of that was that the oil didn't drain quick enough so it got stuck in the housing, overheated, lost its viscosity, got thin as water and leaked out thru the rear bearing and into the exhaust.

The second thing that were no good was the internal wastegate flapper. It got stuck on wide open so I didn't get any boost at all.

SO...I had to straighten up and turn the turbo. While I was at it I blocked off the internal wastegate and mounted an external wastegate. To make all this work I had to re-build the up and down pipe and add a pipe to the wastegate.

All pipes are stainless steel.

I had to make a cut in the up-pipe (lower end) and then bend it 2.5 inches to the left.No pic of that sorry.

Here's a few pics of the re-build.

Started with the pipe to the wastegate.

Then we test fitted the wastegate and welded the elbow to the block off plate:

Then we made the rest of the downpipe:

When the downpipe was finnished we started on the outlet piping from the wastegate:

Finnished product looks like this:

Here is how the enginebay used to look like:

I'm not quite done yet..I have to heatwrap the pipes and give the enginebay a good clean up.

Thanks for looking.

Looks pretty neat but why did you make the pipe to the wastegate so long?

Due to lower back preassure.
If you connect the pipe straight into the elbow you'll get a huge amount of turbulence.

it's only about 20 inches long.It doesn't HAVE to be that long, but the further it's from the outlet the better. They say that 10-15 inches is enough tho.

I only asked b/c all of the aftermarket ones have the flange relatively close to the uppipe. Maybe you are onto something new?!

Side note:
CLEAN THAT ENGINE BAY!! Haha.

it WILL be cleaned after I've done the heatwraping!..lol
Wet heatwrap makes a lot of mess.

If I'm onto something new I don't know..the thing I do know is that this isn't something that will make things worse..

Thank's for the comments tho..
