Lenovo has some pretty good prices right now, however, they're more on the pricey side.

I was pricing out a X61 tablet for a friend, and found some codes/coupons to drop a $2000 tablet to $1200.

Don't buy Dell. They really are crap computers. I just got a dell last year for college and in a year's time they get exponentially slower than any laptop. Even my mom's 5 year old IBM runs better. I would go with Lenovo if I were you or Toshiba or Fujitsu.

i was really close to buying the sl400. with a 14 inch screen its very portable. as is its $639 however, you can customize your order. if you get the cheaper os (home basic vs. home premium) they subtract $49. upgrage to 2g of ram, 160g hd, and a dvd-r and it still comes out to $660.

i didn't get it because i can't really rationalize the purchase right now. my toshiba is old and slower at multitasking than i would like, but it still works. i don't care for toshiba's customer service so i swore them off after this one dies.

+1. Dells are utter trash, and people think they're good just because they have some pretty good "sales" out there that make their laptops cheap, so they control quite a bit of the market.

Heck, my 700m laptop was shipped with the mic jack not working, in fact I think about 90% of them were shipped without it working, but they would not fix it. Also, there's a huge design flaw in my laptop, that the wires to the speakers fatigue extremely, so the speakers just die randomly, and you have to basically take apart the monitor and solder 1mm thick wires (not fun)

Lenovo is what used to be IBM, and they make the best quality laptops. From what I hear, Fujitsus are pretty close to Lenovos as well. Compaqs are made by HP, and my roommate's HP laptop has insane cooling problems to the point where you can almost burn your hand on the bottom of his laptop if it's been on for a while.

But yeah, stay away from Dell, I regret ever giving them any of my money.

Edit: A quick search gave me these:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834146451

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1212192622683

Both are a little on the heavier side, but atleast laptop companies are realizing Vista takes at minimum 2gb to run at all. The Lenovo's HD is a bit faster, so you'll have better data accessing times and Pentium is definitely leading the way with chips now.
