IM also wondering if installing a cold are intake or a short ram would it thru a check engine light on me or make my car run weird without a tune?

Some will tell you to search as the answers to your questions can be found all over.
A short ram will suck hot eng bay air unless you get a air box for it. A good CAI that has the stock diameter piping where the maf goes shouldnt throw a code. A CAI or Short Ram is not needed unless you have other eng mods done too. If you want the whoosh sound and to hear your bypass valve then an after market intake will give you that. The Perrin CAI and AEM CAI will work without throwing a code, both are true cold air intakes.
I had a short ram and my car didnt like it as much as it likes the CAI or the Stock Air box. FYI You can also upgrade the stock airbox to flow better.

Go with just a drop in filter for better air flow. I installed k&n typhoon for about a week before going back to stock. Stock intake is good for up to 400hp. Other then that your just getting the whoosh sound.
