Intake Question?

So my question is...what is the worst that can happen if I put...say a K&N CAI on my car with a COBB Access Port and I use the Stage 1 SF Intake Map on my car? Can this damage my car? I have been reading around and seems to me that an intake is an intake. It's gonna do the same job. Is this true?

You're going to get a ton of different answers, or so you think are answers, to your questions.

I don't want to say more than you are asking, but personally, I think an intake filter should be just fine if you're running an OTS map and the filter is all you're running. You'll just be running rich or lean until you fine tune the car on a dyno. You really have no need for an AP until you start to mod your car even more than just an intake filter or unless you use all functions of the AP.

Hope that helps.

Yes, that helps. Thank you. I do plan on getting a catless downpipe and the cobb electronic boost controller. I already have an exhaust and Cosworth intake.

Oh good, that's good to know!

Yeah, worst that can happen, from my experience, is that you'll just run a little rich or lean. But if you have those other supporting mods, you should be fine if you get it tuned. Good luck!

stock intake is food for 300whp and any setup on a stock turbo, dont go all paul walker on us and get it just for the sound, if you do get an intake get a protune if you really want it!

I will second 04cali on this one.

I ran a K&N for awhile when I first got my subi b4 I came on the boards, it sounded cool but my boost would fluctuate at top end that was with an AP running stage 2. I took it off, and then it ran fine.

I wouldnt even get a drop in just run the stock airbox till you exceed 300 WHP...

The stock intake is a restriction before you hit 300 whp. Even on the older model 2.0L WRXs you stand to gain an additional 8-10 whp at stage 2. The newer WRXs have an even more restrictive Legacy style intake and will make worthwhile gains even at stage 1 with accompanying tuning.

That's your decision to short yourself up to 15 whp. It's not necessarily what everyone else is looking to do. And a drop in is just a filter.

OK to the OP

Cobb does not reccommend using any intake but thiers with the OTS maps...

That being said I shared my personal experience with you that happened to me when I installed a K&N using an AP with an OTS map. I however have an 05 WRX not a 2011. You may have a different experience.

To Brfatal I think they key word you used there was "with an accompanying tune" Now more power to him if he wants to spend the $300 for a tune on top of the $150 for the intake for an additional 8-10 HP.

Maybe I shouldnt be so quick to judge. I forget we are in the bay area and everyone had disposable income like that round these parts.

You read into that incorrectly. What it meant was that you will see that gain with an intake and tuning over what you would see with the custom tune and no intake. If you're going stage 2, no matter what year model, you're paying the same amount to get tune regardless of stock or aftermarket intake. In the case of his model year, he has an even larger stock turbo and a more restrictive intake, so an intake is beneficial even at stage 1.

Thanks guys for the info! I might test the waters and let you know what happens. I think it is always good to experience these kind of things first hand.
