Anyone have any advice on what I should do to upgrade the exhaust on my 98 Legacy Wagon? Thanks!

I wouldn't waste your money on anything other than mufflers.

Not sure if that one is compatible with the L exhaust, but you should be able to get the mid pipe flange rewelded for cheap to match it if not. Might want to check before ordering.

I just went to a good muffler shop and had them crush bend a 2.5" catback for my 98 Outback (the stock one was literraly falling apart ). I just brought them OBX (eBay) muffler, resinator and flanges, they did the rest. All said and done it cost me about $200-ish(?)...but that was also 2+ years ago

Nothing that fancy I believe it is the one --> Product Name - OBX Racing Sports

You can readily get any of the OBX ones for $40-50...and even less if you are patient for a sale. Their quality and design is more than sufficient for a daily NA application.

These guys said they can install a Magnaflow muffler for $300 (parts/labor). Should I go for it? Exhaust System

Why does every exhaust shop pushes Magnaflow? Seriously... $300 sounds normal...but $150 of that is the muffler and $150 is the labor. Magnaflow makes nice products, but I personally could not justify +$100 premium over the OBX-type one for our cars.

Other things to consider...are they going to weld the piping straight onto your cat/header or put a flange for easier servicing? And are you planning on running a header at any point in the future? If you are, flanges are definitely a must and just a muffler won't be sufficient to reduce the sound to tolerable levels. As me how I know You will want a mid-pipe resinator as well...

2.5RS headers fit on 2.5L Legacy engines (I am running one)...I wouldn't be srprised if the 2.5RS exhaust systems did as well.

Yeah, I think they were just going to weld the muffler straight on with no flanges. Is there any other disadvantage to that other than running headers? What's the advantage of running a header, and how much more work is that?
