swapping auto for 5 spd
anyone know of any places in either ct or mass that will swap my auto in my 95 legacy for a 5 spd manual tranny? i'm talking labor charges moreso, as i have access to the parts. but does anyone also know what exactly i need to perform this swap as far as parts go too. i know it would be a ***** to do. or does anyone on here even know how to do it and i could pay them to?

I think Andrew (Kaos) on the real Subaru BB posted some details on his swap. He is doing the same thing to his auto WRX.
Basically the transmission (transaxle) FWD ratios are different so in addition to the tranny swap, you gotta swap the rear diff, and as the auto tranny Subbies use a an electronically controlled clutch in place of the viscous coupling centre diff, you should swap that as well.
Fo normal (in traffic) driving an Auto tranny Subbie is best. As long as yours isn't slipping, or otherwise on the verge of failure, I think your best bet is to leave it be.
If you really MUST have a 5 speed, you are probably best advised to purchase a second subbie with the 5 speed.

From what I've read its a huge mess. I'm a mechanic and you couldn't pay me enough to do that swap...and have it actually work without CELs and open loop. OK. I'd do it for $2000, but only on a race car or something people didn't as a commuter. You'd expect it to be perfect and it never could be.
You and your legacy are still at the point where you can sell it and get a car with a manual. Less head ache and probably alot cheaper.
I used to have a Legacy GT auto, I drove a GT manual acouple of times and the auto seemed alot faster to me. It zinged thru the RPMs like there was no tomorrow!
