You guys hear Pat Tillman was killed in Afghanistan this week? He was the guy who two years ago turned down a $3.3 million NFL contract to become an Army Ranger. Poor guy. Not that the sacrifices others are making aren't selfless, but how many people turned down a life of millions and riches to go fight for their country?

To some, money isn't the most important thing in the world. Now that you mention it, neither is keeping out of harm's way, for some individuals. I heard the news on NPR this morning. Tillman's brother is also serving as an Army Ranger but didn't get as much publicity because he was a minor league ball player.
I think it's not so much the amount of money involved but the fact that they chose to volunteer for what they knew was going to be extremely hazardous duty in a wartime situation. Special forces personnel are all volunteers. I think it's admirable that Pat Tillman volunteered for duty but I don't think that the money makes it any more tragic of a story than the next guy who also volunteered.
One of my very best friends served on a SEAL team near the end of the Vietnam War. He did the things you see in the movies, staging raids on Viet Cong prison camps to free POWs. He told me that things didn't always go as planned and sometimes ended disastrously wrong, contrary to the rosy picture the U.S. Navy paints of their exploits. Even after all of this, he volunteered for a second tour of duty after his first was over. He enlisted in the Navy even though he could have easily gotten an education waiver but he's one of those guys that wasn't comfortable with letting someone who couldn't afford a college education get drafted to go to Vietnam.
I once asked my friend what makes a guy volunteer for special forces. After a moment, he replied, "I guess it's part male-posturing and part-patriotism - of course, patriotism has something to do with it."
EDIT: My friend was 19 years old when he enlisted in the Navy.

1. *****es, money and fame.
2. get shot at by a bunch of guys you don't know, kill people and maybe die.
He chose 2. I gaurantee you I would have chosen 1. I'm selfish though

It just sucks that you can see the two paths he could have taken, you know which one he took, and this is how it ended for him. I totally agree that it's VERY tragic when any of the people die, but this one made the front page on MSN

Mr. sonicsuby, I'm sorry if my tone sounded like harsh criticism. You didn't say anything that was out of line, just commenting on a tragic news item that broke today. Yes, it's always a sad thing when people die.
Yeah, I would probably have taken the money, too.

You didn't and I was offended

It was hard to explain what I was saying, as it was hard for you to explain what you were saying over the net. Tone and inflection would have helped a bunch

Everything is
though
