I would be up there co-driving but this happens to clash with a much bigger event for me (25hrs of Thunderhill).

The roads used last year were fast and long and really far away from everywhere.

The state of Nevada is laced with roads like that, some of which don't see traffic for weeks or even months at a time

I wouldn't advise exploring out there alone, although I've been know to- but not without spares, tools water and overnight gear just in case.

if you've been to burning man and know the way there, just head out that way and turn right about 20 miles before Gerlach...

That is correct, you need to drive at least a couple hours out of the bay area to find good unpaved roads.

I volunteered to work last years rally (only like 13 competitors). It was cold as hell, so if you go bring warm clothes, but it was worth it IMO.

The roads used are on BLM land, which is federally regulated land. It is patrolled, and technically you can just go up there and have fun. I don't know if they enforce speed laws or whatever, but you will end up having a nice chat with an officer if he sees you bombing around up there. When hunting season starts, there will be hunters up in those areas and perhaps some rock crawlers -- not too many though, since there are better areas for that -- so its not totally deserted, but mostly so.

The roads are about an hour or so north east of Reno, near Gerlach and the southern tip of the Black Rock desert (where Burning Man is, if you are familiar). The main entrance to the rally is right at the north end of the dry Winnemucca lake, outside of the indian reservation.

psoper is right, though, that you don't want to go out there alone. I chatted quite a bit with one BLM ranger and another BLM mapper, and they said that they always cary 4 spares when they cross more then 2 hours of BLM roads. One had two flats getting out to the rally last year, and that is with this truck tires. I wouldn't go bombing around out there without scouting the roads first, as they can turn from flat and graded to pot-holed and washed out very quickly.
