Hmmm. Auto, or stick?
When you say cuts out, do you hear any noises? Does the power taper off, or is it a sharp cut?


I'm not too familair with the old EJ22T's, but your wastegate might be sticking open or something, meaning you'd go back to no boost......

 

the gas smell might be running way too rich. Do you have any mods ?

 

If the power is dropping off, and you smell gas, sounds like you might have a fuel pump problem...and that's a ton of miles.
