Im looking into doing an engine swap of some sort into my 1998 2.5 GT. The thing is from constant discussin with smart and stupid people alike the consensus is that the suby ECUs arent as well tunable as others. Looking for recommendations or possible problems with tuning Suby ECUs especially the 01 or newer EJ20T ECUs since that will be the most likely swap. Also if anyone has any input on tuning any standalone systems or which ones to use Id appreciate it. My goal is 300+ HP and a decent degree of daily drivability.

If you're swapping, the WRX ECU is by far the most tunable option available. It's much simpler than the drive-by-wire ECUs in the STi, FXT, OBXT and LGT. With a shop like Cobb releasing the StreetTUNER, there's very little reason to go with an aftermarket ECU if the engine will be close to stock in configuration and a daily driver.

I am looking into doing a number of mods to this motor prior to swapping it into my car. A fully forged lower end everything will be studded and full rotating balance some work done to the valvetrain like upgraded springs maybe titanium and possible porting. The general goal is to have a motor that will handle 500+ HP but be able to run reliably with 350-400. It isnt really going to be a daily driver more of a saturday night track car thats legal to run on the road. Basically what i am getting at is if i am doing internal work to the motor and upgrading vital components like injectors map sensor and a larger turbo. Will that be within the parameters of what the ECU can handle or will i need a piggyback of somesort like an safc or can this type of thing be programmed directly to the PROM. I dont know if anyone has access to the max and min allowables for a 01 or newer ej20t ecu but if any of you know that or know where i can find out. Also for anyone that has personally tuned thiers and is in the 350-400HP range i am curious to see how you went about it and what problems you had. Also what about a 75+ shot of the juice anyone know how that goes on an ej20t ecu. Thanks for any input and happy tuning.

You'd have to go into the Impreza forums to see about what people are running, ECU wise, when they get in the 350+ range. I know that a couple companies offer stock ECU flashing with their higher horsepower packages. The STI ECU is a bit different, and a lot more complex, but that hasn't stopped Cobb and others from keeping the stock ECU for their staged upgrades.
The problem you're going to run into with a custom motor is that it's going outside of some of the general parameters of the stock engine, so basic functions may not work as well with a stock ECU. Something like the Access/StreetTUNER from Cobb or an Electromotive TEC3 may need to be used for fine tuning a truly custom setup.
