Question Sputter sputter..cough cough

Car: '96 (BG?) Legacy 2.2l w/ 5spd

Symptoms:
CEL is off, no pending codes.
Motor hesitates at low rpm while accelerating. I can replicate the symptom 100% of the time like this:
On a level road, rolling in 2nd at about 10-15 mph, I'll floor the throttle. Engine takes a good 3-6 seconds to reach 2000+ rpm, at which point it smoothes right out.
Motor does not hesitate above 2000 +/- rpm.

I've gone through the engine, looking for vacuum leaks and anything that may have come loose, but everything seems kosher.

Any ideas on solving this one?

Problem solved!

There were two faults that I came across.
1. Spark plugs were worn...about 50k mi in 18 months
2. Plugs on driver's side were a full turn loose!

Changed out the plugs and torqued them down ...as was done last time. Can't figure out how they came loose.
Also changed out the wires as they were original with 210k miles.
