So I talked to some Subaru Mechanics today, and now i'm more confued than ever...
So, long story short, I blew the engine in my 2000 Legacy GT. I'm trying to find the most inexpensive route to replace it. EJ25's are running anywhere from $900-$2000, *if* I can even find one.
So I go to Subaru today, and talk to a mechanic. He basically tells me, I'm better off going for another EJ25 (duh), BUT, that I could put in an EJ20 or EJ22. Theoretically. He showed me some blocks and it turns out, the Intake manifolds are wider, and therefore would need some mods. First off, how hard is it to change those anyway? He also said the DOHC 2.5's fit nicely, but the engines are horrible, he has problems all the time. Stay away from em. *sigh*
But he also gave me a number to a local import engine place, which I called, and they fed me almost the opposite. They told me the EJ20/EJ22's won't fit at all, that I MUST put another 2.5 SOHC back in, and that not even the DOHC's from the late 90's will fit. Stress level....increasing...
So screw it. If I have to pay 2 grand for an EJ25 and another 500 for install, why not go for the EJ20TT from the early legacy's? I can get one around here for about $600-$700, which includes intercooler, ECU, and wiring harnesses. After install, modification, new hood and labor, how close would I be to 2500 anyway? It's becoming a headache, can anyone help me out here? I'm scared to death to buy an engine, have it sent over, and then find out that installing it is going to become a NIGHTMARE! Noooooooooo......

Well, the EJ20TT is probably for a right hand drive which doesn't work very well because of the steering column. The wiring is the really big hurdle when it comes to a swap. I would expect atleast $3k more than the engine to get it in and running. If you have the money look into it. You might want to post in the NW forum for other shops to talk to about this.
There is a guy on Nasioc that had an STi engine put in his Legacy in Seattle. You might want to contact the shop he went to.

I asked about that when he mentioned the engine, it's from the american Legacy's, so it would be lefthand. Still have no idea how hard it would be to install it though...

Maybe give LIC a call - they're in California but may be able to steer you in the right direction. http://www.licmotorsports.com/

Well, anything is possible with the right amount of money. And at this point, I'm going to give up and just save up and get azz raped for an EJ25. The only glimmering ray of light and hope I have is my dad works at a car dealership (jeep/dodge/chrysler, but a dealer nonetheless). Gave him the number to the place where my local subaru dealer gets their engines, he's going to talk to his mechanics and the owners, and see what strings he can pull. At this point, it's my only hope for a while.

well...seeing that my buddy Mark has about four blown to **** EJ25's line up against a wall in his shop....I'd say that you should be able to find one because he has never seemed to have a hard time. With all the wiring complications when it comes to swapping a subi, I'd be looking to find a direct, bolt-in motor for this situation and call it a day. Less stress, less money in the end and you know it'll work well. Just my $.02

I blew the rod bearing and main bearing in my engine, so all I really need is a block, not the entire engine. Anyone know of anyone selling just the block? (2000-2004 SOHC EJ25).
