Running hot

Hey all! I'm in a quandry. Every once in a while, my '98 2.5GT pegs the temp guage. Before this started to happen I had the timing belt replaced and he did a water pump while in there. After it started to get hot, I have had the radiator, and thermostat changed. Actually three thermostats, but who's counting?
Has anyone else here had trouble with an overheating problem? My newest theory is a bogus aftermarket water pump that is just barely adequate, but cavitates at high revs. Thoughts?
I might add that normal driving, short shifting at or before 4000 revs, it runs nice and cool. It's when I start to really use the engine that it protests.
Also, I keep getting a "check engine" light that codes out to "number 1 cylinder misfire." Related, or coincidence, and what could that be?

Try searching this board in the N/A forum as well as NASIOC for "headgasket" problems, which are well known with the Phase1 motors. Does your overflow/return tank ever push out coolant when this happens? Black "gunk" or bubbles in the tank? It usually manifests itself as a small leak into a coolant passage, where the exhaust gases push coolant out the overflow. Good idea to have the coolant "sniffed" to look for exhaust gases, and/or have a leak-down test done on all 4 cylinders.

Oh no!!!!

the deadly 2.5L headgasket gremlin sounds like he's hit again!
Go Here
Get that checked out!!!!

Not terminal, just expensive!!! The new 4-layer head-gasket:
part# 11044AA610 is supposed to be a big improvement. As long as you get this taken care of prior to "catatrophic" failure all should be OK, but having the block surface and heads checked for warpage while they're off would be recommended.

I'm going to stop by my mechanic on the way home from work. We're going to check for exhaust in the radiator.
He'll probably talk me into a "full rebuild" while the engine is out. It won't take much talking either. I'm of the opinion that if he's in there already, might as well replace rings and bearings.
Besides, the poor thing has almost 85,000 hard driven miles on the clock!

Well, I'm on foot for a bit! I stopped by my mechanic last night thinking he would just have a poke around and send me on my way, scheduling the repairs for next week. Oh heavens no! He took a sniff at the "pancake syrup" smell coming from my tailpipe, and the exhaust smell coming from my radiator, then took my keys away!
He'll be pulling the engine today and should have more details tomorrow.

Temp coolant recevoir fix
Have this same overheating problem with 90 Legacy. Indications are bad head gasket - blowing coolant out of overflow tank. Was adding coolant often. Installed plastic 5 quart oil bottle and ran new long overflow coolant hose to it. Also installed indicator light so I know when radiator fan is on. Temp fix is working. Quit needing to add coolant. Now getting black gook in new recevoir bottle confirming bad head gasket. I am driving it easy until have money to repair as I am unemployed overqualified automation engineer.
