Cat-Back Exhaust or Fart Can?

Hey guys, I'm looking to buy a new exhaust for my 2000 GT. My question is, will a cat-back exhaust fit without any other mods needed (just installation) or should I just go with a basic muffler? Also, I know a cat-back gives some pretty good response/power combined with a cold air intake (that's next), but does a regular muffler do anything except add attention to your car? Any help is apprectiated, thanks.

A new muffler doesn't do much except attract unneeded attention.

My brother just got a COBB cat-back on his '00 GT. It sounds awesome. There seems to be a little seat of the pants power gains, but that's questionable. I really liked it a lot and it wasn't too "hey look at me". I'd stay away from the grapefruit shooter for aesthetics sake
