2001 Legacy Check Engine Light
Hi folks,
Recently I've had the Check Engine Light come on, on our 2001 Legacy. It would go away after 4-5 days. And it would come back on after that. This happened for a month or so. I thought perhaps there's an emission issue with the car. But if that's the case, shouldn't it remain on constantly?
I wasn't sure what was wrong so I asked the dealer. One of the service personnel said to check the gas cap. I've opened the gas cap, cleaned around it and cleaned the lip entry point to the gas tank. Closed the cap back and started the engine, sure enough the light went off.
I have an appointment with the dealer to check it out but it will cost $90 just to run the diagnostics. I wonder if I should just wait another week to see if it comes back on. If it does even after I made sure the gas cap is closed tightly and properly, then I'll bring it back to the dealer.
Anyone has any thought on this?
Thanks.

Sounds like you never had the Gas cap on tight enough I know it was a problem on Honda's as well.
Save your $90 and wait and see if it happens again.

Yeah, gas cap not tight enough, or you're overfilling your tank. Those often cause that.
Do you have an aftermarket exhaust or have you ran over any rocks and knocked around the cat or anything? May want to jack up the car and check out the underside...check the sensors and such, make sure theres no gaping holes anywhere.
Maybe run some gas treatment stuff through a tank too..Its like 10 bucks at most gas stations.
Good luck,
