Used Legacy pre-purchase question
Newbe post so hope I have the right forum. Looking at getting my first subaru, and am looking at the Legacy wagon GT or L in a 2000 to 2002 model year. Will be purchasing in Ontario, if this makes any difference.
1. Is there is a big difference in quality between 2000 and 2001 (ie avoiding the first model year)?
2. Is there much difference in the handling between the L and the GT (I've only got my hands on GT's so far)?
3. For higher milage cars what repairs do you have to expect -I've been finding a bunch of 2000 lease returns with 75-125 thousand km on them. I'm wondering when to expect timing belt, cv joints alt, water pump etc and how stupid the prices are.
I intend to have a preinspection done when I have narrowed it down, but I want to be a bit better informed so I can better sort between the apples and oranges -and hopefully skip the rotten ones.
Thanks for any help

Get a gt of outback, because the L interior is SOOOO plain and boring. It is the same car otherwise, just no sunroof, leather, nice wheels. Only one engine in all the legacy cars (except for the outback h-6) and they are all reliable.
I haven't reached 75 - 100k miles yet, but on most all cars you should change the timing belt around there. And cv joints can be inspected real easy, so you will know if they are good or not right away. And they are easy to tell if they've already been replaced too.

i thought the L only had the 2.2 L with like 140 hp or something...while the gt has the 2.5 w/ 165. i also think the suspension is a little stiffer, could be wrong though.
i love my gt wagon, you won't be dissapointed.

mke sure the ecu has has been reflashed and the air/fuel ratio sensor replaced at the same time-have your local subaru dealer run the repair history and and see what recalls and other repairs have been done-have them lift the car up and show you the bottom of the cylinder heads-look for any signs of leakage-we have head gasket problems with that year range-some slight apeeage is ok thou-pay the extra to have it checked out-save you alot of money in the long run
