Newbie needs info & help
Hi, I'm new here. I just picked up a 97 Legacy GT 2.5 auto w/110k miles. I would like to know what are the common problems for this car? So far I have noticed that the fog lights don't turn on and the fog light button also doesn't light up, the climate control unit doesn't light up, the power antenna stays up, the driver side door key hole is very hard to lock & unlock, there is some sort of metal vibration heard during idle, and the headlight low beams aren't very bright at night. I think that's all the problems I've encountered so far. Can anyone give me some advice about these problems?
I am also looking to buy wood grain trim that goes around the radio and center vents if anyone knows where I can purchase those parts? Thanks

OK, OK, Lots of views, no reply because most of these have been dealt with time and again, but since you're a Noob, I'll try to help.
1)Foglight button should be backlit and light a different color when switched on. Bulbs are just like HVAC mini-lights and install from the side of the button after you pry it out gently with a screwdriver. They don't work? I'd look at fuses/connections after checking owners manual.
2) HVAC lights do light as well as show which is selected. Look here; http://www.scoobymods.com/
3) Depending on whether you hear the motor operating when the radio is switched on/off it could be fuse/motor/toothed "stiffener" inside the mast is broken.
4) WD40
5) Vibrating heatshield on exhaust.
6) Design problem, but the lenses also age and discolor and can be cleaned and polished with polishing compound/Brasso/Toothpaste/Novus plastic polish etc. DON'T just throw in some hi-watt bulbs or you'll fry the harness. I installed a HD Harness with bigger gauge wire and relays to gain some output, but don't expect miracles.
7) See the dealer, or post in WTB forums. Enough owners ***** about woodgrain and may want to get rid of woodgrain.

Since you have a GT which came with the 2.5 liter engine I would watch very very closely for head gasket failure. Due to improper tourquing at the factory the Subaru 2.5 engines where notorious for head gasket failure in almost all years. Not that it will indefintily happen but i would watch for it.

Why doesn't Subaru just admit it's a problem!
A recent poll on NASIOC I did (it's still there. Anyone is welcome to vote to make a more accurate measure) showed that out of 22 Impreza respondents, 25% of them had headgasket issues.
So yeah... I really don't know. I want to buy an Impreza, but I don't want to have to deal with a blown engine, especially if I buy an older car out of warranty. Suggestions anyone? I'm really desperate for answers but I'm just not finding any...

Blitzsileighty, congrats on your purchase I just drove a Subaru recently and I like it (it was an Impreza 2.2L, though).

I did some more research on the other Subaru forums. I decided to sell this car. I read that the 2.5L DOHC version 1 has a problem with piston slap. And not to mention the head gasket issue. I wish I would have known this before I purchased the car. It was my fault for not researching before hand.
