I need a transmission expert

OK so here is the deal.... Is there some way that I can modify an overdrive automatic from a 1994 legacy JDM so that I can run it without the rear driveline attached????

I have heard that a transmission could have the differential welded.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks
matt

You could just swap in a FWD transmission from a 92-94 Legacy, remove the driveline and rear differential, and replace the rear hubs with those from a FWD Legacy. That'd get you better fuel economy, acceleration in the dry, and whatever else you may be looking to accomplish with a welded differential.

hey thanks for the reply. I have thought of that but it is my understanding that the fwd transmission cannot handle the same hp as awd trans. also I have already have the awd transmission.

will a welded diff work?

I think that I finally get it. the awd transmission has a center differential. could I remove this differential and replace it with the gear that is installed in the fwd trans and then plug the drive line hole??

That sounds feasible, yes. There may be an Impreza owner that has done this, but I'm unaware of anyone who has. You may try contacting a few performance rebuilders, like IPT Performance ( http://www.importperformancetrans.com/subaruauto.shtml ), and asking them if it's possible.
